70427 - Battleship SMS Kronprinz, 1914, 1/700

SMS Kronprinz was a König class battleship that served in the German Imperial Navy during World War I. Kronprinz was completed in November 1914. She joined III Battle Squadron at that time.

Kronprinz participated in the Battle of Jutland on 31 May 1916, but received no damage. On 5 November 1916, Kronprinz was torpedoed by the British submarine J.1 near Horns Reef. Damage was light and Kronprinz was repaired by December. On 5 March 1917, Kronprinz suffered a collision with sistership Großer Kurfürst in the Heligoland Bight. Repairs lasted until May. She was also instrumental in the German victory at the Battle of Moon Sound in October 1917.

On 27 January 1918, the Kaiser directed that the ship be renamed Kronprinz Wilhelm in honor of the Crown Prince.

The ship survived the war, only to be surrendered to the British at Scapa Flow, where she was scuttled along with the rest of the High Seas Fleet by her own crew on 21 June 1919. She lies on a 35 m deep seabed with the hull inverted with the keel at about 15-20 m deep. Large holes pierce the hull where salvaging for valuable metals took place. The location is a popular dive site, and the guns are visible near the seabed.
